Red Clover Potential June 2022

Red clover field in northeast SK, showing promise for good yield, June 2022.

2021 Forage Seed Year: a snapshot

Although much of the north east region had good 2020 soil moisture, below average snow accumulated through the winter. As a result, as spring advanced soil moisture conditions were average to below average in much of the area.

Forage seed yields varied a lot this year within and between fields. Clover and grass seed yields in the area ranged from 50% of average to average depending mainly on localized rainfall. Forage seed harvest is pretty much all wrapped up at this time and despite the lower yields on some fields there is no indication of seed quality issues. The other positive was that harvest for most forage seed crops was not delayed by high humidity or rain.

As the year comes to a close, soil moisture in most of the region is once again below normal and precipitation in any form (rain or snow) will be very welcome. Producers will be waiting until this moisture arrives before applying fertilizer on their grass seed stands.
