2026 Field Day Forage Seed Production: Breeding new varieties, fertilizer and fields, insect pests and pollinators
Wondering how to fit enhanced efficiency nitrogen fertilizers (EENFs) and phosphorous nutrition into profitable multi-year seed production systems? Check out the SFSDC field day on Thursday, June 25, 2026 in the Rural Municipality of Moose Range. The tour will include a visit to a hybrid wheatgrass field that is part of a FaRM Field Trial evaluating the nitrogen use efficiency and profitability of fall-applied EENFs in forage & turf seed production systems of northeast Saskatchewan. Learn also about the breeding of hybrid wheatgrass CDC Salt King, sweep netting technique and the pheromone-based early warning system for monitoring the arrival of true armyworm moths, their predators and other beneficial insects and pollinators. The Saskatchewan Forage Seed Development Commission (SFSDC) is pleased to partner with Farm Resilience Mentorship (FaRM) Program to support practical, lower-emission and more resilient farming practices.
Enhanced-efficiency N fertilizers are promoted as a climate-smart option, but we still need to learn more about how they perform under Prairie conditions, especially in perennial crops. With funding from the FaRM Program, SFSDC is running on-farm trials to compare P and N fertility options for forage and turf seed crops. Learn more about FaRM by visiting FarmLearningHub.ca.
